A Spine that Shines? Yep!
Setting, Plot, & Characters
Kasie West has done it again! This book has the perfect summer setting. I loved reading about the lake and the marina. The scenes out on the water are breathtaking and relaxing. Overall, the plot is slightly predictable, but I didn’t mind. Who doesn’t love a podcast where an anonymous caller calls in and asks for love advice? Or a school festival where a bunch of secrets are revealed? Sometimes I do get annoyed with plots in which a character crushes on their best friend’s crush, but I think Kasie West managed to execute this story well.
Family is definitely a strong theme in many of Kasie’s books, but especially so in Listen to Your Heart. I really liked the main character Kate, and her family was huge! I enjoyed reading about all her little cousins, and Cousins’ Night sounds like a load of fun! Her parents are present and actually demonstrate involvement in her and her brother’s lives. I also loved the Community Dog (AKA “CD”). The book also deals with more serious issues like school bullying, but it helps bring their family even closer.
I was totally cheering when Kate finally lets go of her ex. I’m sure many of us have had that moment where we just have to delete that person’s phone number and un-follow them on social media. Props to Kate for doing just that.
And let’s talk about Diego for a minute. He is a really cool dude! He likes to cook and dreams of traveling around the world. He comes up with a really thoughtful way to ask a girl to the festival. He is diligent in his quest to get the girl he likes. I can definitely see why a girl might crush on him.
It was also cool to see some ethnic diversity in the characters Diego and Alana!
Overall, this is pretty much what I’ve come to expect from Kasie West. A clean, adorable romance with no sex and no cursing. Listen to Your Heart is an appropriate read for younger YA readers that will make you feel all light and fluffy inside. I’ve still got two of her other books to catch up on, and I can’t wait for her future publications! Happy reading!
